Type Specimen Poster - Didot

This project is a study in a specific typeface, and to design a poster showcasing its history and significance in its form. The poster can only include type, color, and a background.

Modular Alphabet

This assignment asked to create a Latin alphabet in upper and/or lower case based on a system, using the least amount of components. The objective is to create a modular alphabet of uniformity.

The first alphabet utilizes triangular pixels to display the alphabet. The angular shape facilitates sharp edges of the letter forms, however posed challenges for creating straight lines and maintaining a consistent x-height.

This second alphabet utilizes strokes from other existing writing systems, as the prompt of using few elements instantly reminded me of Chinese writing which utilizes very few type of strokes. However, the Chinese strokes posed challenge for creating the cursive forms of many letters, so cursive strokes were borrowed from similar Japanese hiragana and katakana. This alphabet uses strokes isolated from the Chinese "丶", hiragana "つ", "し", and katakana "ハ" and "リ". While these elements in combination with rotation and scales did not satisfy the assignment requirement, it was a fun experience for me to apply calligraphy into an alphabet to create a mix of classical and fresh look.

Forces on Your Page

This project is to study the concrete and expressionistic aspects of typography. A required text is provided, and four pairs of composition were made: Chaos/Order; Flatness/Depth; Stillness/Motion; Form/Counterform. Coherent legibility of text is not necessary. Distorting the Helvetica bold font is not permitted. Variable font sizes, overlapping and any angle of positioning is allowed. All four pairs are preferably visually part of one family.

Animated Billboard

The prompt for this project is using only “Stop Covid-19” as text and create a series of 100 still images that produce this effect. The required tool is Adobe Illustrator and the required typeface is the Univers family.

For a one-week project using Illustrator for animation, I intended to minimize visual elements in the animation and focus on the visual impact the billboard can provide. Red, yellow, and blue theme was chosen to provide the largest visual impact and also a sense of emergency. The multiplication of the text imitates the spread of the virus and more importantly to spread the message.

Typographic Pattern

The objective of this project is to construct and deconstruct units of letter combinations which in turn form a harmonious pattern. Type can be chosen from Futura, Gotham, Syntax, Univers, Garamond, Bodoni, Caslon, or Walbaum.
